Zilla is a Colorado based trio of musicians with the live experience in mind. A 100% organic, improvised experience, each Zilla concert proves to be a completely new occurrence, with even the band members having no idea where the music will take them night after night. Relying on their uncanny ability to listen and incorporate their individual talents into a group focused brand of live electronic dance music, Zilla is sweeping the country by storm with their rare breed of beats, bass and uncontrollable musical fury making each performance exactly what live music is all about: spontaneity, grooves, and a damn good dance party.
Forming in Boulder, CO, Zilla began as a quintet before changing to it’s current three man roster comprised of acclaimed musicians: Michael Travis, Aaron Holstein, and Jamie Janover.
Michael Travis (drums, percussion, keyboards) has spent over a decade as the driving percussive force in the nationally popular String Cheese Incident. Travis continues to be an innovator of improvisational drumming, managing to play hand percussion while simultaneously keeping incredible rhythm with a kit.
Aaron Holstein (guitar, bass, sampler) has had a long and lush musical history, playing guitar with bands such as Boogie Shoes and The Vibe Squad. Holstein’s progression has transformed him from the notion of a typical guitar player, to an applauded adapter leaving behind the traditional notions of what it is to “jam” with a guitar or bass. His playing focuses on the whole of the sound, rather than the individual instrument.
Jamie Janover (hammered dulcimer, mini-kit, percussion, sampler, electric kalimba, electric sitar, mini-electric kalimba) is a world renowned hammered dulcimer wizard whose list of band credits is more than impressive. One time hammered dulcimer Player of the Year, Janover continues to expand the limits of his instruments, creating a fusion between the timeless sounds of the dulcimer and the pertinent call of today’s modern dance scene.
While each individual’s accomplishments are impressive, the group identity theory behind Zilla is what truly makes the band unique. The constant focus of the group is to create a whole, complete sound devoid of noodles, wanking, solos and other characteristics that plaque improvisational music today. The music strives to serve all participating, including the audience. No one in the band has any idea what is going to happen a nanosecond ahead of time; they rely on their instincts and musical history together to create a sound that rarely strives from its intended direction. The collective whole is truly the dominant force in this band. (more..)

| EOTO |
In a small room located backstage at the Portage Theater in Chicago, I ask Jason Hann what exactly influenced him and Michael Travis to pursue the heavy, beat-based electronic dance music of EOTO. Hann is all smiles as he tells me about the impromptu jam sessions that occurred whenever he stayed at Travis' Colorado home.
"Whenever I was at his place, we just wanted to set up and play music after String Cheese practice," says Hann, who served as auxiliary percussionist for The String Cheese Incident from 2006 until the band's dissolution in 2007. Travis, SCI's drummer, would play bass and guitar during the sessions, while Hann handled the drum work.
What started out as loose jamming quickly evolved into something more. They began looping some of the instrumental work, which allowed them to add extra layers to the texture of their sound. "As we started getting into some other loops and different types of programs, then it became a thing where we were like, 'Wow, what we're doing lends itself really well to dance music, which we both like.' So, we kept aiming for that direction," Hann says. "And then eventually, one of the times we listened back to things that we were recording and we were like, 'Wow, that sounds really good, let's do it front of an audience.'"
And so it began. EOTO was formed and the duo hit the road, touring relentlessly across the country. They have spent the entire summer playing shows and festivals nationwide, and their stop this night has brought the boys to Chi-Town. This show, however, will be a little different - Hann and Travis will be joined by Michael Kang (electric mandolin, fiddle) and Kyle Hollingsworth (keyboards), both of whom are also former members of String Cheese. | Panjea |
After spending time studying music in Africa, Chris Berry returned to the US and formed Panjea as a musical avenue to help bring healing to the world. The band has its roots in the ghettos of Zimbabwe, where Berry learned to play mbira and began commingling hip-hop and dancehall beats with traditional African rhythms
“Panjea believes that through the sharing of ideas and open cultural exchanges, the world can once again become a new kind of Pangaea (referring to the ancient conjoined land mass before the continents split apart), united not by its physically joined continents, but by its people,” according to a statement on the band’s website.
Asked to describe the main message in the band’s music, Berry responded “liberation."
“Liberation, in all senses of the word, wherever that word can be applied … politically, socially, personally. It’s about liberation of movement, and being able to dance.”
The band added a new element after a fall of 2005 tour when Panjea was given the opportunity to open for renowned jam band String Cheese Incident. That led String Cheese mandolin player and vocalist Kang to join forces with Berry, a partnership that continues today and will be on stage at Sopris Park this Sunday.
Berry couldn’t remember who exactly initiated the idea of the two collaborating.
“I think we kind of approached each other about it,” he said. “We had mutual friends and we respect each other’s music and started talking, and it just sort of worked out.” (more..)

| Hot Buttered Rum |
Hot Buttered Rum, one of the hardest-working and fastest-rising stars in the musical firmament, has become, over the last five years, a group that is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. It began with a core of uniquely talented musicians, writing and singing songs on the mountaintops and city streets of Northern California; musicians who, on the night they realized they loved playing together too much to ever stop, were sipping a warm buttery drink from which the group derived its name. Since that fateful night, the organization has steadily expanded to include a rich tapestry of fans, friends, and family, reaching from coast to coast.
Often described as a rock band playing bluegrass instruments, the band melds blues, folks, bluegrass, jazz, and rock, and the members’ varying degrees of classical training lead them to invest heavily in group composition. The widespread appeal of HBR’s music stems not only from the band’s musical versatility and prolific songwriting, but also from the magnetic chemistry the group creates onstage together. It is this chemistry that is propelling the band to ever greater success. (more..)

Maesyn grew up in a household of musicians, playing in the family band. She began her classical training at age 4, playing violin in baroque ensemble and orchestra. Her father was a folk musician, and as a young child she'd jump on stage with his band to sing and fiddle. Having spent years in a cappella groups, she loves to harmonize and beatbox. Quoth she, "There is no union more blissful than merging in harmonic vibrational frequency!!" In certain forests and the occasional airport lobby, Maesyn is notorious for her perpetual , wickedly dexterous whistle. She whistles arias, concertos, Bob Marley tunes, arpeggios ... cell phone rings.
Maesyn's live performance is the essence of her existence. She melts into the music and becomes one with it. She loves to be silly, laugh at herself, twirl, and be a vessel for spontaneous expression. She has an album, "Now.here!" and is currently in the studio recording a new album with the Luminaries. Maesyn is passionately obsessed with deprogramming societal conditioning, and using her psyche as a canvas to create art's manual for self-liberation. | Soul Union |
The primary creative forces of Soul Union are Johnny Dutro and Weston Thomson.
These two talented and contrasting artists bring together deep and primitive energies through the use of electronic and traditional instrumentation, with purpose and intention. Thomson is rooted in the electronics providing beats, sounds and sequences while Dutro utters original lyrics that go straight to the medulla and beyond with a trance dub delivery in his vocals.
Thomson switches from keys, beats machine and various electronics while Dutro plays a collection of hand drums. Meanwhile, no less than three other musicians trade off a hure collection of western and traditional instruments from around the world.
African polyrhythm mingles with saxophones and violins. Latin and Asian influences compliment hypnotic trance hymns. Two constants weave throughout: a conscious message of growth and healing through love and Dutro’s reggae-influenced zen rap. His soft-spoken, but commanding voice exudes a powerful intention to better the world. (more..)

| Prema Mayi |
Prema Mayi was born in Chile. At the age of twelve, she entered an ashram of Bhakti Yoga in Europe. Now, thirty years later, her natural, gentle zeal for bhakti is embellished with a warm-hearted maturity and an inspiration to share with others what she has imbibed, through the medium of sweet and melodic kirtan.
The practice of bhakti develops transcendental devotional sentiments, and kirtan, its foremost process, is saturated with transcendental sound vibration. Under the guidance of her guru, Srila Bhaktivedanta Narayan Maharaj, Prema Mayi’s absorption in the study and practice of bhakti blossoms. Each year she journeys from America, where she now lives, to perform pilgrimage of Braj in the holy land of India.
Prema has learned sacred chants and mantras that have been carefully passed down through a disciplic succession of pure-hearted saints over the centuries. The potency of these chants has been preserved. The source of these chants is divine, and therefore they resonate with our soul, the essence of our being.
It is not necessary to understand the language of the chant, as its potency is beyond our comprehension. With an open heart one may relish the bliss carried through this vibration. The soul’s inherent yearning for spiritual happiness is fulfilled in every possible way through the practice of Bhakti Yoga, which directly connects the soul with Divinity. Bhakti Yoga accesses the inner heart of every living entity, where the foundation of the craving for eternity and the bliss of real love is active. When it is humbly practised under the guidance of one whose heart is steeped in pure love for the Supreme Person, one receives a relish with which no happiness in this world can compare. Prema Mayi in her own natural way wishes to share what she has learned from such an acharya with you. (more..)

Deva Priyo has been travelling the world for some 20 years sharing his unique blend of Afro-Mediterranean Gypsy trance music before founding Lost at Last in 1996 (now renamed "One at Last") In 1992 he founded his band "Gypsy Moon" in Byron Bay, Australia, which rapidly became one of the most popular dance bands down under, playing at the Melany Festival every year from 1992-1995, among others, and regularly packing clubs along the coast. Priyo was awarded "best world beat song" for his song "Mosamba" by the Byron Bay community in 1993.
Gypsy Moon also gained a strong following in Hawaii upon his return to the islands, which helped to create the first fan base for Lost at Last. Now re-located in the Pacific Northwest, Deva Priyo continues to tour with "Gypsy Moon", the original "organic" trance sound he created that drives everyone wild with its passionate, fiery guitar work and deep, rootsy Afro-trance. Currently Gypsy Moon consists of Priyo on nylon string guitar, a loop station, Brian Forbes on conga and other percussion, and Trey Longstreph or Glen Falkenberg on bass.
A master of many instruments, including the nylon string & electric guitar, the sarod, birumbao from Africa, and various percussions, he has a great ability to express the mysticism and depths of the soul and help others experience true freedom and beauty through music. (more..)

| Z |
Z grew up in Memphis where a culture of music pulsed around him. He lived in the Idaho mountains before moving to Seattle, Washington, in 1986. He was playing his 12-string guitar live in the desert at Burning Man when he discovered the raw minimalistic elements found on his first CD,Water Sines—Tone Poems in the Key of H2O. | Cornflower |
Cornflower is a vocal-instrumentalist who lives for the moment. His music is a mix of many styles and genres, yet it is unique and is too elusive to label. Most importantly, his music has a purpose... like a time capsule from the future, here to help bridge the gap between our world and what is to come.
Cornflower's music emerges intuitively through an 'accapella scat' that is very familiar and tribalistic. He uses 'vocal-percussion' aka Beat-boxing that is not meant for spectacle but to serve as a foundation to his soaring melodies and atmospheric sound effects that bring a depth and richness to the sound wanting to be birthed. Last, but not least, he uses a Loop station that allows him to layer these many vocal-instrumentations into a symphony that if your eyes were closed, you wouldn't believe it was being created solely using his mouth.
